The Fraser Fir (Abies Fraseri) is one of the most popular Christmas trees sold, known for their striking dense yet soft foliage of glossy dark-green/silver needles - these form on branches that point slightly-upwards, giving them a more compact appearance. Fraser Firs are also known for retaining their leaves well and for having a strong balsam scent.

Where did the Fraser Fir tree originate from?

Fraser Firs specifically originate from the Appalachian mountain region of the South-Eastern United States. Due to factors including pests and climate change they are actually now considered an endangered species, with natural populations being on the decline they can be difficult to find growing in the wild.

How did this tree get its name?

The species is named for its discoverer, Scottish botanist John Fraser (1750-1811), an ardent collector of North American plants, who first introduced it to European cultivation.
