The Norway Spruce tree (Picea abies) is a large, fast-growing evergreen, which is native to Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe.  As the Norway Spruce is widely grown in Europe and the UK it is the original Christmas Tree!!  The needles are prone to dropping but if you keep your tree well-watered throughout the festivities this can help.

Did you know?

Oslo, the Capital of Norway, provides London (Trafalgar Square), Edinburgh and Washington D.C. with their own classic Norwegian Spruce Christmas Tree each year.  This is Norway’s way of thanking these countries for their aid during the second world war.

Who do we have to ‘thank’ for this Classic Christmas Tree idea…

We have Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, to thank for the Norway Spruce being used as a Christmas Tree in the UK… In the 1800’s, Prince Albert introduced decorating a Spruce tree with candles, since then, Norway Spruce has been one of the leading ‘must haves’ for Christmas.
